Wanting to get your garden in shape for the summer, but in desperate need of a new lawnmower and some new hand tools? Allow us to guide you through what’s available so you can get the perfect garden equipment, tailored to your garden.
Cylinder mowers – with vertical rotating blades, these mowers will give you a very close cut so are best on level lawns. Probably not advisable if your lawn is uneven though! Cylinder mowers are great if you want a striped finish, and most come with different cutting widths.
Rotary mowers– come with horizontally rotating blades which will not give you as close a cut as a cylinder mower, but are better equipped for larger uneven lawns and even weeds and moss. Get one with a built in roller if you want a striped lawn. Rotary mowers can also be self-propelled which is worth getting if you have a large lawn or find it hard to push a mower.
Hover mowers - these mowers have rotating blades that skim the surface of the lawn. They are perfect for uneven surfaces and steep gradients but you won’t achieve the same quality cut as other types of lawn mower. Lightweight, they can even be hung in your garden shed and they are also the cheapest mower available. All hover mowers are electrical so you will need a power source to plug into near by.
Of course if you have a very large lawn then you may want to look into ride on mowers, which will save you both time and energy.
For garden hand tools, they really are dependant on your hand size, flexibility and what it is you are planning for your garden. For those pruning and trimming jobs, get yourself some cross cut or anvil secateurs(if the stems are under 2cm thick) or for thicker stems invest in some cross cut loppers. If you need to cut through tougher stems then geared or ratchet loppers are the best bet.
