Plant diseases
Minimize

There are a number of elements which can lead to your plant getting a disease; lack of water, mineral deficiency and the weather are all strong contenders. So how can we keep our plants healthy and resist the fungi, bacteria and virus getting a hold?

How to prevent your plant from getting a disease

  • Make sure that your plant is well watered, if the plant is short of water it leaves it much more prone to disease.
  • Prevent frost attacking your plants as frost freezes the water within the plant – make sure you have a good airflow between plants, and set up barriers to help prevent this.
  • Make sure that you have a good balance of minerals in your soil – if your soil is too acidic and is lacking in necessary minerals then will become susceptible to infection.
  • Keep your plants well spaced out, they shouldn’t need to fight for water, light or nutrients from the soil.
  • Try not to cut your plants unneccarily – as with our skin, if we cut ourselves we are more likely to allow bacteria in, the same goes for your plants.
  • If you have a greenhouse, then make sure that you water your plants with clean fresh tap water, and keep your compost fresh.
  • If the infection on your plant has been there a while, it’s very difficult to help. In these cases you need to remove the infected section or, if necessary, the entire plant will have to go so that the disease doesn’t spread to your other plants. Always burn the infected plant, making sure that you pick up any leaves that have fallen off so you exterminate the infection completely.
