Growing Tomatoes

A salad is surely not a salad without tomatoes (yes Caesar, we are talking to you), so brighten up your plate with a juicy red home-grown this summer...

Sowing the seeds

  1. Fill your pots with compost to 1cm below the rim.
  2. Put 4-5 seeds in to each pot – not too close to each other so that they have room to grow.
  3. Spread another layer of compost over the top of the seeds (about half a centimeter is enough) and water the seeds with your watering can (using the sprinkler attachment again to ensure an even distribution of water).
  4. Put your pots on to a warm (15-20°C) windowsill.

Maintaining your croptomatoes

Make sure that you keep your tomatoes well watered every day, just so that the compost remains moist. The seeds should begin to show any time after a week depending on how warm it is.

Once the seeds get to about 6cm, they will need to repot in individual pots. You can use the same sized pots you grew the seeds in (7.5 - 8cm). Ensure that you look after the roots as you pull each plant out of the pot, and then make a hole in the compost of your new pot and drop the plant in. Ideally the plants will then need more room, so repot as necessary as they grow over the months.
