Planting for the summer

With summer fast approaching and the soil beginning to thaw, it’s time to start planting those summer bulbs to brighten up your garden or windowbox.

Best Bulb Buys

Star of Persia (Allium Christophii) – large globes with pink/purple flowers
The African Lily (Agapanthus) – tall, blue flowers
Lily (Lilium) – large, very fragrant white flowers, with orange stripes

Buying and Planting

Buy your bulbs fresh! Look out for damage and in case of any mould, they should be dry and healthy. The bigger the bulb, the bigger the flower will be so bear this in mind with your selection.  You should then plant them in spring when the soil is warmer, and try and use soil that is well drained as summer bulbs have a tendency to rot.

How to Plant

  • Use individual holes or if you have a lot of bulbs then dig a trench.
  • Make sure the bulb is planted 2/3 times its depth and ensure it has enough space around it.
  • Put the bulbs in the holes/trench with the growing point sticking upwards, then cover over with soil.

Don't Forget!

You are able to reuse summer bulbs so make sure you take them out at the end of the summer before the weather drops too cold! Dry out and clean your bulbs off, you can then store them in paper bags or in nearly dry sand for the winter months. Don’t forget!
